Burgh
W.I.'s annual summer outing to Elton House in Cambridgeshire was
another most enjoyable event. The coach left Burgh at 8.30am on
Wednesday 10 th August the weather being dry and warm although a
little overcast.
At
10.15 the coach was welcomed by the guide and two groups were given
a private viewing to the magnificent Hall home of the Proby family
for over 350 years and is currently the residence of Sir William Proby,
Chairman of The National Trust.
In
1860 the Drawing Room, previously the mediaeval chapel, was decorated
in an opulent French style with family portraits by Reynolds, Hoppner
and Romney. The Library is most impressive with a vast collection
of over 12000 books and includes Henry VIII's Prayer Book containing
writing of the king and two of his wives.
The
gardens were stunning with a new Gothic Orangery and garden built
to celebrate the millennium.
The
outing continued to Peterborough with free time for lunch and shopping.
