Burgh
W.I. members visited Grimsthorpe Castle on their annual summer outing
on Wednesday 2 nd August. Grimsthorpe has been the home of the de Eresby
family since 1516. It is an imposing quadrangular building cleverly
designed with all architectural features being mirror imaged on all
opposite sides both externally and internally, including an oval design
on the ceiling having an oval design on the floor directly underneath
it, even the internal furnishings are arranged symmetrically, giving
a calming almost modern style which belies the historical dating. Each
stateroom is opulent with much of the furniture originating from the
old House of Lords.
Following
the tour of the Castle members enjoyed lunch in a private room. At 2pm
a coach trip around the vast estate of pastureland, lakes and tree avenues
stretching as far as the eye could see, with the commentary by Mr Ray
Biggs, Estate Manager, was an added bonus. Mr Biggs explained how the
park was designed. The historic oak woodland was very impressive. Each
oak tree is tagged containing their individual statistics and also each
tree has its position plotted by satellite calculations. The dead trees
are not removed providing habitat to insects and fungi. On return to
the castle there was free time to enjoy the formal gardens.

A
visit to Hansen Chocolate House at Folkingham, concluded the day's itinerary
where members enjoyed tea, coffee and chocolate mousse cups garnished
with a strawberry and a film on the Cocoa bean.
Special
thanks to president, June Smith, for her efficient prior arrangements
with Grimsthorpe and Hansen's who unfortunately through illness was
unable to attend herself.
