The month of June is our outing month, so this time we went to our Local Museum in Waiuku and had lunch in the Kentish Hotel which is a vintage in it's own right.

Kentish Hotel

It was interesting to see the things of the past, some dating back to your Grandmother's time or even your own childhood days. Pictures and aerial photos of days gone by, some members remembering where and how they used to live. Old fashioned pots, pans, crockery and silver teapots etc. taking you back to times long ago. Farm implements from the Horse drawn days , even a woman's side saddle. How uncomfortable to ride a horse that way and in a long skirt too. (but a least your legs would be kept warm)  I am glad that I live in this century. But it is nice to see how the early settlers lived and this is our heritage.

After spending time amongst all these old things we went upstairs to see a DVD produced by Jim Reardon and Helen Danes , about the growth of Waiuku from those very early days.

As Waiuku was on a tributary of the Manukau Harbour water transport played a very important part in the growth of this town. Roads where nearly non existent and every thing came by water, though that could be treacherous too, manipulating the bar at the entrance of the harbour.

One of our early very famous Prime Ministers Richard John Seddon visited Waiuku during his time of office, was impressed and spoke of its growth, but times change and it still remains a small but friendly town.
