Andrew Sankey

The May Burgh W.I. meeting highlighted the Resolutions which are to be debated at the NFWI AGM at the Cardiff International Arena in June which are:

Renewable Energy: To urge all levels of government to put in place legislation and policy requiring the use of renewable energy technologies in all new buildings, re-building and renovation."

Sport for a healthy population : To urge HM Government to recognise that participation in sport is an essential factor in the creation of a healthy population; to ensure the re-establishment of competitive (mainstream) sport in the curricula of all schools; and take such steps as are necessary to reverse the decline in the availability of sporting facilities for all citizens, particularly in light of the 2012 Olympics being awarded to the city of London."

Burgh members wished that delegate, President June Smith, use her judgement based on the pros and cons presented at the AGM to cast her vote on Burgh's behalf.

Andrew Sankey gave his fascinating presentation on “ Cottage Gardens ” and immediately dispelled the stereo typical image of the English Cottage Garden ; taking members back in time to the forerunner of today's cottage garden, the medieval hovel, and working through the centuries. Gardens were small and contained chickens and possibly a pig with herbs and vegetables and a muck heap! The original self sufficiency idea of “The Good Life”.
