“My time in the Cinema Industry” by Joyce Stocks Joyce, who was born in the late 1920's, was first taken to the pictures by her parents at the age of eight and from that moment was totally hooked on the magic of the cinema. In those days they were opulent and palatial buildings with grand chandeliers, sweeping staircases, doormen immaculately dressed and the manager looking magnificent in his tailcoat and bow tie.

| Joyce
did realise her childhood dream and ambition of becoming a cinema manager.
Despite being a woman of only 5 feet tall, she ultimately attained executive
level, which was remarkable in those days in what was then considered
to be a male occupation.
She
explained the many publicity stunts which she had the vision and initiative
to put into action. |
|
These publicity “attention grabbers” always related to the theme of the film currently being shown, and on one occasion she managed to get two baby elephants outside the cinema to advertise a Circus film. There were very many more amazing events which thoroughly entertained the W.I. members.
