Today we were taken on a journey to the Antarctic. Neil Bristow made this journey there when he was a young man in the Army. He spent six months of summer in this place and recorded much of the scenes and happenings on his slide camera.

He slept in a tent to start with,  but later a shed with no windows, as in the summer there is no darkness and the winter brings the night  Was it cold,  we asked, not really,  he answered. The light reflected on the ice this beautiful blue, but making it look so cold.

We saw Scott's base, a very weather worn building reminding us of him and his team's dreadful deaths. New Zealand is now involved in enervating this building.

We were fascinated by the dogs, they looked so fluffy and friendly but they were extremely active
When their leader came to hitch them up to pull the sledge, each dog had to be pegged down separately so as not to run off and when all was ready, unhitch , run like hell and jump on the sledge before the dogs got too far ahead.
The Americans were based there too and the ships were teetotal, so when they wanted a party they came ashore and had their party on the ice pack.
A lot of the buildings were built under the ice, this making them much warmer.
This is something that only a few are privileged to see and experience.
