“Art of the Needle” was the theme at the July Burgh W.I meeting presented by Val Letts, a W.I. member for over 30 years. Val brought a vast array of exquisite craftwork and described her techniques, which included Elizabethan embroidery, wire work embroidery, the wire outlines the intricate stitches, Mount Melic , Irish needlecraft which was white fabric with white stitching giving an embossed effect, and a Black-work picture depicted a delicate filigree patterned butterfly. Quilo patchwork was also exhibited, with a large selection of decorative boxes. Val told of her both amusing and disastrous experiences of being a speaker.

President, June Smith, delegate at the National Federation AGM which she attended in June at Cardiff International Arena, reported that the resolutions on Renewable Energy and Sports for a Healthy Population were both passed.

The guest Speaker, Hilary Benn MP, International Development Secretary, was the highlight of the day. An excellent speaker, passionate about his job and very knowledgeable about all environmental issues both in this country and around the world.

Burgh W.I. bursaries of £150 and 2 for £12 each for educational courses were won by Lyn Clark , Pamela Vessey and Glennis Rogerson respectively .
