Alford Windmill
This five sailed mill, built in 1837 by the local millwright, John Oxley is one of the finest tower mills in England. Alford was one of 2 towns in Lincolnshire that had 4, 5 and 6 sailed windmills, the other being Horncastle.
For much of its life, Alford Mill was worked by the Hoyles family who also ran other mills in the county. It stopped working in 1955.
Two years later the mill was bought by Fred Banks of Kirton in Lindsey, who restored it to working order. In 1978 Mr Banks replaced the sails and the top or cap. In the same year the mill was taken over by Lincolnshire County Council and it was leased by to Mr Banks. He gave up the mill in 1986, his place being taken by James Waterfield of Boston in the following year.
The mill is now leased to Geoff Dees and is one of 3 commercially working windmills in Lincolnshire. |
